Project Hail Mary on Audible

Project Hail Mary is a novel about an American astronaut alone on a space ship in a distant solar system. It’s got lots of science in it. The astronaut uses his knowledge of maths, physics, chemistry and biology to solve a variety of problems. And of course it’s by Andy Weir, the author of The Martian, that famous novel about an astronaut doing science alone on Mars.

So far it doesn’t sound very promising does it? I enjoyed The Martian very much but was quite disappointed when it looked like Project Hail Mary was going to be a copy cat.

As I had the book on Audible, and it was something to listen to at bedtime, I kept on with it. I’m so glad that I did. The story takes an unexpected direction when the astronaut makes contact when an alien species. After that point, Project Hail Mary becomes a remarkably original and warm hearted book.

I enjoyed the story so much that I felt sad when it ended. Listening to it on Audible gave me more pleasure than anything I’ve seen on Netflix recently. That’s high praise coming from me as I love TV shows.

The Project Hail Mary audiobook is narrated by the actor Ray Porter. I loved his narration so much. He has such a warm voice and he’s brilliant at doing the different voices.

Porter loved recording the book. He told Audiofile magazine: “It’s got everything in it—hard science, great sci-fi, great characters, wonderful interactions, terrific friendships, comedy . . . it ticks all the boxes.”

I think it’ll be a while before I find an audiobook that I enjoy as much as Project Hail Mary.
